Abstract

The decision-making process regarding higher education is a significant milestone in the lives of college students, shaped by a complex set of academic, personal, social, and economic factors. This study aims to explore the preferences of college students in Coimbatore concerning their pursuit of higher studies. Recognized as an educational hub in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore hosts a diverse student population, making it an ideal location for this research. Data was collected through structured

questionnaires distributed across various colleges, aiming to capture insights into students' motivations and expectations. The study examines critical determinants

such as course specialization, institutional reputation, career prospects, financial affordability, influence of family and peers, and the growing interest in international

education. The findings reveal that while traditional factors like employability and affordability remain vital, students are increasingly drawn towards programs that

offer skill development, research opportunities, and global exposure.Furthermore, the research highlights notable differences in preferences based on demographic

variables such as gender, socio-economic background, and field of study. Male and female students showed varying inclinations towards certain streams, and students from rural and urban areas differed in their approach to higher education aspirations. The study emphasizes the need for academic institutions and policymakers to adapt to these evolving trends by offering diversified programs, strengthening industry collaborations, and providing effective career guidance services. By understanding the shifting priorities of students in Coimbatore, the research contributes valuable insights towards shaping policies that align educational offerings with student expectations and market demands, thereby supporting the holistic development of future professionals.
