It was assumed that having an excess of iron made people with liver illness more likely to die. It has been shown that patients with acute on chronic liver failure and decompensated cirrhosis benefit from having their transferrin and transferrin saturation levels checked as survival indicators. Transferrin is thus essential to the treatment of these people. Patients with cirrhosis who have low transferrin levels have decreased synthetic function. A risk factor for the development of the disease and death in cirrhosis is inflammation, which may be indicated by high ferritin and low transferrin levels
