Abstract

Depression among adolescents is a serious psychological, educational and social problem. Adolescence is a period of rapid physical, emotional, cognitive and social change. During this stage, young people become more sensitive to academic pressure, peer judgement, family conflict, identity confusion and social comparison. Depression is not ordinary sadness; it is a persistent condition that affects mood, thinking, behaviour, sleep, appetite, concentration and daily functioning. The World Health Organization reports that one in seven adolescents aged 10–19 experiences a mental disorder, and depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability in this age group. WHO also identifies suicide as the third leading cause of death among people aged 15–29. UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children 2021 reports that more than 13% of adolescents globally live with a mental disorder. This study examines the causes, effects and preventive measures of depression among adolescents. The study is based on primary survey data collected from 100 adolescent respondents through a structured questionnaire. The findings show that academic pressure, family conflict, bullying, peer pressure, loneliness and social media comparison are major causes of depression. The main effects include poor academic performance, social withdrawal, low self-confidence, sleep disturbance, irritability and negative thinking. The study concludes that adolescent depression can be reduced through school counselling, friendly family environment, mental-health awareness, anti-bullying programmes, healthy digital habits and timely professional support.
