The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of antimicrobial herbal soap using Carica papaya as a natural active ingredient. Herbal soaps are gaining importance as safer alternatives to conventional synthetic soaps due to their reduced side effects and added therapeutic benefits. In this study, papaya extract, known for its enzymatic and antimicrobial properties, was incorporated into soap formulations along with neem oil to enhance antibacterial activity.
Four different formulations (F1–F4) were prepared by varying the concentration of papaya extract while maintaining other excipients constant. The soap base was prepared using the cold process method, ensuring proper saponification and uniform consistency. The prepared formulations were evaluated for physicochemical parameters including physical appearance, pH, foam formation, and stability.
The results indicated that all formulations exhibited acceptable organoleptic properties with a smooth texture and characteristic color. The pH of the soaps was found to be slightly alkaline, suitable for topical application. The formulations demonstrated good foaming ability and stability without any significant changes during the study period. Among all batches, the optimized formulation showed better overall performance in terms of stability and usability.
The study concludes that papaya-based herbal soap can be effectively formulated with desirable physicochemical characteristics and potential antimicrobial activity. Such formulations may serve as a natural, safe, and effective alternative to conventional soaps in skincare applications.
