Formulation and Evaluation of Herbal Gel Containing Leaf Extract of Mangifera indica
Skin infections and disorders such as acne, eczema, fungal infections, and inflammatory conditions have shown a rising prevalence in recent years, largely attributed to environmental pollution, changing lifestyles, and the prolonged use of synthetic topical agents. While conventional pharmaceutical preparations provide symptomatic relief, they are often associated with side effects including skin sensitization, microbial resistance, and long-term dermal damage. This has prompted growing interest in plant-based formulations that offer efficacious therapeutic action with minimal adverse effects.
The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of a herbal gel incorporating the leaf extract of Mangifera indica (Mango) as the primary active ingredient. Mangifera indica leaves are well-documented in traditional medicine for their potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antioxidant properties, attributed to the presence of bioactive phytoconstituents such as mangiferin, quercetin, gallic acid, and tannins. These constituents have been shown to inhibit microbial growth, reduce inflammatory mediators, and scavenge free radicals, making them highly suitable for topical dermatological applications.
The leaf extract was prepared using ethanolic maceration, a standard extraction technique that facilitates efficient recovery of active constituents. The extract was then incorporated into a Carbopol 940-based gel matrix, which provides desirable rheological properties for topical use. The formulation was evaluated for a comprehensive range of physicochemical parameters including organoleptic properties (color, odor, texture, appearance), pH, viscosity, spreadability, extrudability, and homogeneity. Additionally, stability studies were performed under varying temperature conditions, and safety was assessed through skin irritation patch tests.
Results indicate that the formulated herbal gel possesses acceptable physicochemical characteristics, including a pH compatible with skin physiology (5.5–7.0), good viscosity, excellent spreadability, and homogeneous appearance. The gel demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against test organisms and exhibited no signs of skin irritation in safety evaluations. Stability studies confirmed that the formulation remained physically and chemically stable under normal and accelerated storage conditions.
