FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF TURMERIC GEL FOR ARTHRITIS

The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of a turmeric-based topical gel for the management of arthritis. Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder associated with pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced joint mobility. Conventional therapies such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids often produce adverse effects during long-term use, creating a need for safer and effective herbal alternatives. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) possesses significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties due to the presence of curcumin, making it a promising candidate for topical drug delivery. In this study, turmeric extract was incorporated into a gel base using Carbopol as a gelling agent, propylene glycol as a humectant and penetration enhancer, and triethanolamine as a pH-adjusting agent. The prepared formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity, spreadability, washability, and skin irritation. The formulated gels showed satisfactory physicochemical characteristics with acceptable pH, good spreadability, suitable viscosity, and excellent washability. No signs of skin irritation such as itching or swelling were observed. The results indicate that the turmeric gel formulation may provide effective localized anti-inflammatory action and can serve as a safe, economical, and patient-friendly herbal therapy for arthritis management. Further in vivo and clinical studies are required to confirm its therapeutic efficacy and long-term safety.
